The Symbols of Huat
Pineapple
The sound of the Chinese word for pineapple is close to the sound of “good luck coming your way,” so the pineapple has become a popular traditional Feng Shui symbol of wealth, fortune, and prosperity.
Ingot
An ingot, or yuan bao, looks like a silver or gold boat shape with a little bump in the middle. These used to be the first type of money in ancient China. Today, many people display gold ingots to attract wealth into their homes or offices.
Coin
Apart from the more popularly known symbolism of wealth, coins also have been used as symbols of power in ancient times. As history has shown, once a new ruler comes into power, he would change the existing coins with new ones of his own design.
Abacus
In ancient times, an Abacus was the tool of calculation, typically used for counting money. It is therefore not a surprise that Abacus is also a symbol of wealth.
Lucky Chinese Characters
There are various Chinese characters that can be linked to wealth, luck, and prosperity. The more commonly seen ones would be 福 and 發, both of which can symbolise prosperity.
福, pronounced as Fu, is one of the most popular characters used to mean and represent good luck. It is also believed, based on the Chinese wordplay, that hanging the character upside down would mean good luck is arriving (福倒=福到).
發 or 发 (Simplified Chinese character), pronounced as Fa, means prosperity and wealth. This word is also how “Huat'' came about, which is the Hokkien dialect pronunciation of the word.
Pixiu
The Pixiu, also known as Piyao, is an auspicious mythical creature that resembles a mix of two powerful animals - a lion and a dragon. A Pixiu is known to bring wealth, luck and prosperity to the owner.
Pixiu is popularly used as a form of jewellery, paired with quartz crystals beads to make into bracelets or rings. Some tips when wearing the Pixiu is to wear it facing out (pinky instead of thumb) as it is believed that the Pixiu can better find and bring in wealth and luck to the owner.
Also, it is important to cleanse and purify these Pixiu and crystals regularly to neutralise any negative energy that may have been collected. In fact, any feng shui related symbols known to bring prosperity and luck can and should be cleansed and purified once in a while.
