Taking Care of Your Jewellery

While gold is durable and has a shine and a luster all its own, it’s also a soft metal. This makes it susceptible to scratches or dents, especially for purer gold jewellery such as 999 gold. In this article, we will be giving you some tips and ideas on how to better take care of your gold jewellery - from wearing to cleaning to storing your jewellery.

Regular Wearing Tips

Be mindful of your gold jewellery while you wear them and remove them while playing any contact sports. This is especially for jewellery such as rings and bracelets that are more likely to get knocked into compared to earrings and necklaces.

Chlorine is gold’s worst enemy. With repeated exposure, chlorine will weaken your gold jewelry’s structure. It is highly advised to take your jewellery off before getting in a chlorinated swimming pool or spa.

Household cleaners with acids or abrasives can damage your gold jewellery too. Be sure to remove your jewellery or to at least use rubber gloves while cleaning. This helps to protect your skin too!

Put your jewelry on last when getting ready. Be sure to put these things on - makeup, perfume, hairspray, and lotions before your jewellery. This limits the exposure to residue and particles that build up and cause damage to your jewellery.

Cleaning your Jewellery

When worn regularly, your gold jewelry is exposed to skin oils, perspiration, dust and more. It would be a good idea to clean your gold jewellery on your own once in a while, especially if you wear it daily. But do take note not to overdo it too! Below are the simple steps that you can follow to give your gold jewellery a good clean.

  1. Mix warm water with some dishwashing soap
  2. Soak the jewellery in (15mins - 1hour)
  3. Scrub the jewellery gently with a soft cloth or soft brush (toothbrush works too!)
  4. Rinse under clean water and dry with a cloth or leave it to air dry

Bonus tip: for an extra shine, use a jewelry polishing cloth after!

Although regular care can be done at home, periodical professional care would be best to keep the jewellery in pristine conditions. It is recommended to take your gold jewelry for professional services like cleaning and polishing once or twice a year.

Arthesdam Jewellery provides professional services such as cleaning, polishing and restoration of old jewellery items.  After a careful inspection of the jewellery, based on its characteristics and conditions, our experts will recommend the best processes to remove superficial scratches and preserve its shine and longevity.

Storing Your Jewellery

It is best to store each piece of gold jewellery in individual storages or compartments to prevent them from tangling or scratching each other. The best storage option would be a fabric lined jewellery box. Otherwise, you can wrap them in soft cloth and keep them in any pouch or box. A little extra tip would be to put in silica gel packets to absorb any moisture present. These can be easily found in most shoe boxes when you purchase new shoes!

Gold is a wonderful material for jewellery as they are one of the most durable metals that does not tarnish or spoil easily like other cheaper metals. That being said, it is still important to take care of them to keep them in the shiny, pristine condition that they are originally in!
