National Proposal Day / Are you ready to get engaged?

If you didn't know, March 20 is National Proposal Day! It is also the first day of spring, which brings warmer weather, longer days, and new beginnings. Get outside, enjoy the wonderful weather, show your loved one how much you care, and pop the question! But of course, that is only if you have been planning to propose but just haven’t found the right day to do it.

For the rest of you who have not decided whether you are ready to get engaged, we have compiled together some things to consider which might help you to make one of the biggest decision of your life.

One of the most common questions people ask is how “long should you date before getting engaged?”. However, we personally think that this is not the best question because the timeframe might not determine much. We believe that some couples can go through more things in a relatively short timeframe, for example a year, than some couples who have been together for many years but never got to know each other well.

More relevant questions that you should be asking yourselves should be along the lines of: “How do you go through challenges or bad times together?” and “How does your partner react when angry or drunk?” because that is essentially what you need to be able to stay in a loving marriage for the years down the road. Married life is very much about facing challenges together and not be against each other.

Also, another important question you might want to ask yourself is “Have you had the time to learn about their past, background and family?” and “Do you know their strengths and their flaws?”. Questions like these can help you to know how much do you really know your partner. You might think that the past does not matter as much as your future together, but knowing their past and background can usually give you an idea of their fundamental character. Even if it doesn’t, it can be a relief knowing that there is nothing your partner would hide from you, no matter how insignificant or irrelevant it might be to you.

Although that we say that timeframe together should not be the decisive factor in whether to move on to the next stage of life together, but it is something that can be taken into consideration. Some of you might have heard of the phrase “honeymoon period/phase” which is the lovey-dovey phase at the beginning of the relationship, and where everything seems fun and perfect. Some believe that this period usually lasts from 6 months to a year. If your relationship has stood strong past the honey phase, you can be just a little more confident that you are both a step closer to a forever relationship.
