All You Should Know About Silver

What is Silver?

Silver is one of the elements in the periodic table with the symbol AG. Silver has long been valued as a precious metal, along with gold, and is also used in bullion coins, jewellery, etc. While it is more abundant than gold, it is much less abundant as a native metal (for example, copper and nickel).

Silver is a soft, malleable metal with a characteristic sheen. Because of its malleability, pure silver is usually mixed or alloyed with other harder metals for most applications.

The purity or fineness of silver alloys is now described using the millesimal system in most countries. This system uses a number to represent the purity of the alloy. The number described purity in parts per thousand.

The most common silver fineness denominations are as below:

How to take care of Silver?

For pure silver, you need to be extra careful with it. Since it isn't very durable and it's soft, you need to make sure not to use them too roughly.

It should also be noted that Silver can tarnish over time. Silver should be stored in a dark place away from air and water exposure. It is recommended to avoid getting your silver jewellery into contact with chlorine, so do remember to remove the jewellery when going for a swim!

If your silver jewellery is tarnished, you can clean it with anti-tarnish liquids and a soft cloth. Some jewellery shops provide or sell polishing cloths, or even services to clean your jewellery.
